New Thread Quartet: avalanche lily

New Thread Quartet returns to our stage with a program of new works for saxophone. The concert centers on Amy Beth Kirsten’s avalanche lily, a multi-movement work inspired by wildflowers from the mountains of Wyoming and developed with support from the Chamber Music America Classical Commissioning Program. Each movement draws from a unique concept found in nature, from flowers whose appearance indicates a risk of avalanche, to plants that split stones and trees holding onto nutrients to survive until spring.

The program continues with several works close to NTQ’s heart. Alon Nechushtan’s Quarantingo was composed during the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic and blends extended saxophone technique with tango and jazz elements. Jonathan Harris’ M. cassinii draws inspiration from a cicada with a 17-year cycle, building a unique soundscape entirely from multiphonics. Emily Koh’s homonym employs microtonal melodies inspired by words that are spelled identically and sound the same, but have different meanings.

Calliope Brass – What’s Your Story?

CVM is excited to present Calliope Brass and their “What’s Your Story?” program on July 11! This event invites kids to explore musical instruments, literary themes, and more, all narrated by Calliope the puppet with an original soundtrack from her brass-playing friends!

In “What’s Your Story”, kids will meet the brass family in a series of “pre-show” videos, and compose their own story. Then, during the show, Calliope the puppet retells the students’ story in vivid detail, accompanied by a live performance of Calliope Brass, who plays original music tailored to the moods of the stories. Our audience will be enthralled as they hear an original movie soundtrack to their own story.

“What’s Your Story?”, featuring the Calliope Brass with a puppet narrator, created with the help of Sesame Street’s Leslie Carrara-Rudolph and Haley Jenkins.
