CVM’s String Quartet returns October 6
Con Vivo Music returns to the beautiful Cathedral Hall with an evocative program of string quartet compositions by living composers. The concert program includes works by Sarah Kirkland Snider, “one of the decade’s more gifted, up-and-coming modern classical composers” (Pitchfork), and “charismatic contemporary bard” (NY Times) Elliot Cole. Paired with these are the world premiere of works by CVM’s own Erin Rogers and Kevin Cummines. This concert will close Con Vivo Music’s 10th season of free and innovative concerts in the Jersey City community.
Sarah Kirkland Snider describes her piece “Ave” as a meditation and response to a polaroid from her own past, and a memory to a lost friend. By contrast, Erin Rogers’ new work for CVM, “Conduire, Camion”, processes traffic noise and inner thoughts. Much the contemplative soundtrack of driving, Rogers dedicates this work to her nephew “whose passion for trucks is boundless” (Rogers). In the same vein, Kevin Cummines new work “Machinatery” is a tonal observation of the frantic nature of our modern reality. And closing the program, Elliot Cole writes about his string quartet “From a cloud of bird cries a song is pulled – at first slowly, with great effort, one note drawn out at a time. From more struggle comes more clarity, and then the music is made incarnate and set free. … After it lives out its destiny, it is pulled from us, disappearing back into the air.”
